Theatre Royal Hobart… Something Special

A Trip to The Theatre Royal, Hobart…

The Theatre Royal Hobart… we’ve already reported that’s where we went to see The Gatekeeper. They hosted the touring performance by the Terrapin Puppet Theatre and we had a great time.  But what we probably haven’t mentioned before is how impressed we were with the actual Theatre Royal.  Hobart has so many annual events and festivals, that it can be easy to forget about the ongoing attractions.

Some places have been in Hobart forever, and probably will be.  That fact is true of this theatre, but it shouldn’t be left off the social calendar for too long.

Theatre Royal Hobart Tours

The very fact that the theatre has been in Hobart forever (or since 1837, at least) is a good reason to visit.  Obviously being a building of that age, there has been several refurbishments over the years, but it still retains much of it’s heritage charm.  You can tour the site (details taken from Hobart’s Theatre Royal website)…

Tours of the Theatre Royal are conducted by the Friends of the Theatre Royal on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11am*. The cost of a tour is $10 for adults and $8 concession. Tours run for approx 45 minutes.

* Tours operate subject to venue requirements and we suggest contacting the Box Office to confirm availability on (03) 6233 2299.

During the early years, there was a tavern incorporated in the entertainment complex.  As you can imagine, this caused some disturbance for the unfortunate performers!  And the seating was arranged to reflect the class or standing in society of the ticket holders, with only the upper tiers having comfortable red padding.

These days, patrons can still enjoy refreshments from the dress-circle foyer – or there’s the option of a visit to the nearby Theatre Royal Hotel.  And as for the seating?  We are pleased to report that the whole venue now has very comfortable padding on the seats.  The seating is still red and all patrons have a fantastic view of the stage, where you are practically part of the action.

There’s a broad range of shows scheduled, with something to appeal to every taste.
