The Market… Tasmania Shopping Delight!
In Tasmania? Shopping? Then off to The Market we go!
Tasmania: Shopping, Art & Design
Simply called The Market, this lovely Tasmanian shopping experience was established in April 2009. Billed as a boutique art and design event, it is held each month at the Masonic Temple on Sandy Bay Road, Hobart.
Masonic Temple, Hobart
Directly opposite St David’s Park, the Masonic Temple building is a worthy venue for the independent designers, having unique characteristics and a great show-case environment.
Split over two levels and having a smaller room separate to the main hall, it provides the shopper with a journey of discovery.
The Market: Treasure
The Market shopping experience in no way resembles a trash and treasure hunt – it’s treasure all the way! The assembled artists obviously combine their creative talents with a passion for unique and quirky designs; each stall presenting fashionable and high-quality, individual items.
Tasmanian Made Presents & Produce
Selling locally-made works of art, The Market offers space to a different group each month. Another attraction in Hobart, Tasmania (shopping aside) where each occasion offers interesting discoveries.
It’s the perfect place to find a special, more personalised present. And what market would be complete without some yummy, indulgent treats on the side?
The Market Gallery: Photographic Exhibition
The conveners also maintain The Market website, where you can get a sneak peek into the delights on offer and plan the date of your visit. They profile some of the stall-holders and reveal the resident artist in the upstairs gallery. On the day of my visit, I was lucky to strike a photographic exhibition, and I was suitably impressed!
The Market Schedule…
If you are in Tasmania (shopping in Hobart), make a date with The Market once a month on a Sunday, between 10am and 3pm. Contact Think Tasmania for more details.

An ideal place to relax with a coffee and paper. The wife enjoyed browsing through the tightly packed halls of unique craft stalls b efore joining me upstairs for a cream tea.
Another Sunday morning favourite is the farmers market in a North Hobart car park. Why not visit this market first then take a walk to the Masonic Hall for the craft market in the afternoon.
Good idea, Roger – we’ve been to the Farmers Market in Melville St, Hobart, but only once so far. We had some fabulous hot soup! They operate there 9-1 every Sunday… and we must visit again soon. We’ll take the camera next time and get more info for Think Tasmania.
