Tasmanian Cricket: Runs on the Board
Tasmanian Cricket to the… Four!
Tasmanian cricket: someone needed to write an article for the website. The kids had an excursion to Bellerive Oval on Friday 25 March to watch the Sheffield Shield final. So I just had to go with them, even though I’m very busy!!
Bellerive Oval
With camera in hand, I went along to Bellerive Oval. Located to the east of Hobart CBD over the Tasman Bridge, the home of Tasmanian cricket was a pretty nice place to spend a session (not that I wanted to!).
With Mount Wellington looming over the stands, there’s nearby water glimpses of Kangaroo Bay and the River Derwent.
Not Just Cricket
The school kids attending the Sheffield Shield final clearly enjoyed the day. Apart from the obvious attraction of an escape from the classroom, there were many keen junior cricketers taking in the action. Some weren’t the least bit interested in sport, but the hill-side lawns at Bellerive Oval were perfect for mucking about.
Sheffield Shield
The Tassie Tigers went on to win the state cricket competition, but the match was very evenly poised during the first innings. New South Wales set a target of 440 runs, with Tasmania chasing down the score with some solid batting after a shaky opening. Eventually New South Wales declared at 5/215 late on day four, hoping to dismiss the Tigers during the second innings. Not to be however, with Tassie cruising home well before stumps.
NSW had to actually win the match to take the silverware.
As Tasmania finished the season top of the leader board,
they only required a draw to be crowned the victors.
First Class Action
Although rain sometimes threatened to spoil the party, the 2011 Sheffield Shield was decided over almost five days of first class cricket. Either state team could have taken the trophy, but the Tasmanian cricket side added to their recent purple patch.
Tasmanian Cricket Pledge
I had forgotten just how much I enjoy a day on the hill. Website article or not, this won’t be the last time I watch the Tasmanian cricket side in action – and that’s a promise!
Although the addition of lights at the Bellerive Oval has been a little controversial (with opposition from the local residents), it has created an opportunity for international teams to visit. Maybe Think Tasmania should factor a One Day International into the schedule for next season. Where is that diary…

Great article Gavin – well done on the photos, too! You’ve done such a good job, I think you should write some more…
